OceanWP vs Astra (2026): Which Theme Should You Actually Use?

OceanWP and Astra are two of the most installed free WordPress themes, and they look similar on paper. Both are multipurpose, both work with every major page builder, and both have big template libraries. In daily use, they feel quite different.

Astra is the lean, tidy one. OceanWP is the one with a switch for everything. I have set up both for blogs and small stores, and this OceanWP vs Astra comparison focuses on the things that actually change your day: speed, settings, WooCommerce, and what you pay after year one.

Short answer: Pick Astra for a blog, business site or anything where speed and a clean setup matter most. Pick OceanWP if you run a WooCommerce store on a budget and want lots of shop features without paying for many plugins. For most readers of this site, Astra is the better default.

How I Compared Them

I installed both themes on the same hosting, imported a comparable blog starter site in each, and looked at five things: default page weight, how quickly I could set up a header, blog layout and footer, WooCommerce features, developer options, and three-year cost.

Where I quote numbers from a third party, I say so.

OceanWP Vs Astra Overview

Astra

Astra is built by Brainstorm Force and runs on well over a million sites. It is known for a light core, no jQuery on the front end, and a very large starter template library.

Astra Pro adds advanced header options, more layouts, a mega menu and WooCommerce controls. Its pricing moved to AI-bundled plans, which makes the entry tier more expensive than it used to be.

OceanWP

OceanWP is developed by the OceanWP team and has a strong following among store owners. The free theme already includes a lot: several header styles, per-page settings, and WooCommerce features like a floating cart.

Premium features come as extensions in a Core Extensions Bundle.

The theme is heavier by default, but it includes performance settings to disable what you do not use.

Round 1: Speed and Performance

This is Astra’s round. On a clean install, Astra loads a fraction of OceanWP’s CSS and JavaScript, and in Kinsta’s test it scored 100 on mobile PageSpeed against OceanWP’s 88.

OceanWP can close most of that gap if you go to Theme Panel > Performance and disable scripts, icon fonts and features you do not use. It just takes effort that Astra does not need.

Winner: Astra. For more ways to speed up either theme, see my WordPress speed guide.

Round 2: Customisation and Ease of Use

Astra puts almost everything in the WordPress Customizer, arranged logically: global colors and fonts, header builder, blog layout, sidebar. The free drag-and-drop header and footer builder is a real advantage.

OceanWP gives you more knobs, including per-page settings in a metabox on every post, which lets you change the header, sidebar or layout for one page.

The downside is that settings are spread between the Customizer, the Theme Panel and the metabox, so finding a specific option takes longer.

Winner: Astra for ease, OceanWP for per-page control.

Round 3: Templates and starter sites

Astra Templates

Astra’s Starter Templates plugin has a very large library for Elementor, Spectra and the block editor, and many are free.

OceanWP Templates

OceanWP offers 17 free demos and 201 premium ones with the bundle. Both are good. Astra’s library is bigger and more modern-looking.

Winner: Astra

Round 4: WooCommerce

This is OceanWP’s round. Even the free version includes a floating add-to-cart bar, off-canvas filters, a mini cart and quick view options.

Astra’s WooCommerce features are good but mostly sit in Pro. If you want a store with lots of shop features without buying extra plugins, OceanWP gets you there cheaper.

Winner: OceanWP

Round 5: Developer Features

Both themes offer hooks, filters and child theme support.

Astra Pro has a Custom Layouts module (now called Site Builder) for inserting content into hook locations with display rules.

OceanWP offers hooks through its Ocean Hooks extension. They are roughly equal here, with Astra’s documentation slightly easier to follow.

Winner: Tie.

Round 6: Pricing over three years

ScenarioAstraOceanWP
1 site, annual$99 first year (3 sites), renews at $149/yr$42/yr (Starter)
3 sites, annual$99 intro, then $149/yr$51/yr (Personal)
10 sites, annual$199 intro (Essential Toolkit), then $299/yr$95/yr (Business)
Lifetime, smallest plan$279$168 (1 site), $195 (3 sites)

OceanWP is clearly cheaper.

Astra’s plans now include AI site generation, hosting credits and Spectra Pro on higher tiers, so you do get more bundled, but if you only want a theme, OceanWP costs less.

Winner: OceanWP

Example: Setting up a Blog in Each Theme

Here is what the same job looks like in both. The goal is a simple blog with a logo, menu, right sidebar and a two-column footer.

In Astra: Appearance > Customise> Header Builder. Drag the logo left and the menu right. Go to Blog > Blog/Archive and pick a grid layout. Sidebar > Right Sidebar. Footer Builder > add two widget columns. Done in about 10 minutes.

In OceanWP: Customise> Header and pick a header style. Customise> Blog > Blog Entries to choose layout. Sidebar is set under General Options. Footer widgets are in Customize > Footer Widgets. If one post needs a different layout, open it and use the OceanWP Settings metabox. Also about 10 to 15 minutes, with more clicking around.

Important note: Whichever theme you pick, the plugins you add matter more for speed than the theme itself. Start with the essentials in my must-have WordPress plugins list and add a proper cache from the caching plugins roundup.

Which is better for WooCommerce, OceanWP or Astra?

OceanWP gives you more store features for free and costs less for premium. Astra Pro is excellent too, but costs more.

Can I switch from OceanWP to Astra without losing content?

Yes. Posts and pages stay. You will need to redo theme settings like header, footer and colors, and check any pages that used OceanWP-specific settings.

Do both themes work with Elementor?

Yes. Both are fully compatible with Elementor and other builders from my page builder roundup.

Conclusion

In this detailed comparison of OceanWP and Astra, both themes showcase impressive qualities, making them highly popular among WordPress users.

Astra wins four of the six rounds, and it is the one I would install on a new blog.

OceanWP earns its place for WooCommerce stores that want lots of shop features and a cheaper license.
