Every WordPress site needs an SEO plugin, and nearly everyone ends up choosing between Rank Math and Yoast SEO. Both handle titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and schema well. Neither will rank your site for you. The plugin is a tool for doing SEO properly, not a ranking factor.
So the real question is which one fits the way you work and what you get without paying. Let us see which is the best in this Rank Math vs Yoast comparison.
Short Answer: Rank Math gives you more in the free version (redirects, multiple focus keywords, a 404 monitor, more schema types), and its Pro plan covers unlimited personal sites cheaply. Yoast SEO is simpler, more conservative and very stable, and Premium bundles Local, Video and News SEO. For most bloggers on a budget, Rank Math is the better value. For people who want fewer settings and maximum stability, Yoast.

| Redirect manager | Free | Premium |
| 404 monitor | Free | No (use a separate plugin) |

| Readability analysis | Included in content score | Separate, detailed readability check |
| Interface | Feature-rich, modular | Simpler, calmer |
| Paid price | Pro about €7.99/month billed yearly (unlimited personal sites) | Premium $118.80/yr per site |

How I Compared Them
For this comparison, I set both up on the same test site, ran each setup wizard, configured titles, sitemaps and schema, and compared the editing experience on the same long post.
I also checked how each handled redirects, image SEO and switching from one to the other.
Round 1: Free Features
Rank Math’s free version does a lot that Yoast charges for: a redirect manager, a 404 monitor, up to five focus keywords per post, local business schema basics, WooCommerce product SEO and Google Search Console stats inside WordPress.
Yoast free covers the essentials very well (titles, metas, XML sitemap, breadcrumbs, schema, readability) but keeps redirects and linking suggestions in Premium.
Two details tip this round further. If you sell through WooCommerce, Rank Math free already handles product SEO, while Yoast sells WooCommerce SEO as a separate add-on.
And if you stay on Yoast free, install the free Redirection plugin, because the first time you change a slug you will want a redirect.
To be fair to Yoast, its Premium redirect manager has a touch I like: when you change or delete a URL, it prompts you to add a redirect on the spot.
Winner: Rank Math
Round 2: Ease of Use
Yoast is easier for beginners. There are fewer settings, and the traffic-light SEO and readability checks are simple to follow.
Rank Math’s setup wizard is good, but the plugin has a lot of modules and options. My advice with Rank Math: switch off modules you do not use (for example, 404 monitor or rank tracker if you track elsewhere).
Winner: Yoast
Round 3: Schema and Rich Results
Both output a clean schema graph (Article, Organization or Person, WebSite, BreadcrumbList).
Rank Math gives you more schema types and a visual schema builder in Pro, which is handy for reviews, recipes, products or how-to content.
Yoast’s schema is more automatic and very reliable, with extra types available through blocks and add-ons.
Winner: Rank Math for flexibility
Round 4: Content Analysis
Yoast’s readability analysis is still the best of the two: it flags long sentences, passive voice and missing subheadings separately from SEO checks.
Rank Math rolls everything into a single 0 to 100 score. Treat both with caution. A green light or a score of 90 does not mean a post will rank.
It means you ticked the basic boxes.
Winner: Yoast
Round 5: Performance
Both plugins are well optimized for the front end; they mainly add meta tags and schema.
Rank Math loads only the modules you enable, which keeps it lean if you switch off what you do not need.
The difference in page speed is negligible. Focus on the big wins in how to improve WordPress speed instead.
Winner: Tie
Round 6: Pricing
| Scenario | Rank Math | Yoast |
|---|---|---|
| 1 site | PRO €7.99/mo billed yearly (about €96), renews at €8.99/mo | $118.80/yr |
| 5 personal sites | Pro covers unlimited personal sites | 5 subscriptions (bulk discounts at checkout) |
| Client sites (agency) | Business: 100 client sites | Per-site subscriptions |
| Local, video or news SEO | Partly included in Pro | Included in Premium |
Winner: Rank Math, clearly, for anyone with more than one site.
Round 7: Rank Tracking and AI Tools
Rank Math PRO includes rank tracking inside WordPress, with 500 tracked keywords on the PRO plan, so you can watch positions for your main posts without paying for a separate tool.
Yoast has no rank tracker. Both now sell AI help: Yoast Premium drafts titles and meta descriptions in bulk with a review step, while Rank Math’s Content
AI runs on credits and goes further into writing assistance. If AI drafting matters to you, try it on one real post before paying.
Winner: Rank Math for rank tracking. A tie on AI, since both need human editing.
Important note: Never run Rank Math and Yoast at the same time. They output duplicate titles, meta tags and schema, which confuses search engines. When switching, use the importer, check a few pages, then deactivate the old plugin the same day.
How to Switch From Yoast to Rank Math (Example)
- Take a full backup first. My backup plugins guide covers the options.
- Install Rank Math. The setup wizard detects Yoast and offers to import settings, titles, metas, redirects (if any) and schema.
- Run the import, then finish the wizard.
- Deactivate Yoast.
- Open five important posts and view the page source. Check the title, meta description, canonical, and schema look right.
- Resubmit your sitemap (Rank Math uses
/sitemap_index.xml, same as Yoast) in Search Console. - Watch Search Console for a couple of weeks for any indexing changes.
Going back from Rank Math to Yoast is less smooth. Yoast can import some Rank Math data, but expect to check schema and redirects by hand.
If you change slugs at the same time, follow my WordPress permalink structure guide so nothing ends up as a 404.

FAQs related to Rank Math vs Yoast SEO
Is Rank Math better than Yoast?
For free features and multi-site value, yes. Yoast is simpler and has better readability analysis.
Will switching SEO plugins hurt my rankings?
Not if you import settings properly and check that titles, metas and canonicals stay the same.
Do I need the premium version?
Most blogs do fine on either free version. Yoast users often upgrade for redirects; Rank Math users for advanced schema and rank tracking.
Which is better for WooCommerce?
Rank Math, for most small stores, because product SEO is in the free plugin. Yoast sells WooCommerce SEO as a paid add-on. My list of WooCommerce plugins covers the rest of a store setup.
Which is better for AI search?
Both output structured data that helps search engines understand your content. Content quality and clear answers matter far more than the plugin.
Conclusion
For most bloggers, Rank Math is the better value: the free version covers almost everything, and Pro is cheap across multiple blogs.
Yoast is still an excellent, calmer choice, especially if you value its readability checks or need Local SEO.
Pick one, configure it once, and spend your time on content instead of chasing a green score.
