GeneratePress vs Kadence (2026): Which Is The Best Lightweight Theme?

GeneratePress and Kadence are the two themes I recommend most often, and readers regularly ask which one to pick. They are both fast, both block-editor friendly, and both come with a companion block plugin. But they suit different people. For more options, see my list of GeneratePress alternatives.

GeneratePress is a minimal, rock-solid base for people who like building with blocks. Kadence gives you far more design tools out of the box, especially in the free version. This GeneratePress vs Kadence comparison goes round by round, with prices you will actually pay.

Short Answer: Pick Kadence if you want the most features for free and a visual, drag-and-drop header builder. Pick GeneratePress if you want the leanest, most stable theme and plan to pay for Premium, especially across many sites, since one $59 license covers up to 500 sites.

How I Compared Them

I built the same blog layout (header with logo, menu and search, a grid archive, a single post with author box and related posts, and a two-column footer) in both themes, using only each theme’s own tools and block plugin.

I compared how long it took, how many settings I had to touch, the resulting page weight, and the cost for 1, 5 and 20 sites.

Free Version

This is not close. Kadence’s free theme includes a full drag-and-drop header and footer builder (including a separate mobile header), global colour palettes, detailed typography controls, related posts and free starter templates.

GeneratePress free gives you a clean, fast theme with basic layout settings and not much else. Its free version is a foundation, not a finished toolkit.

Winner: Kadence

Speed

Both are lightweight, and both pass Core Web Vitals easily on decent hosting. GeneratePress has the edge on a default install and tends to stay leaner as you build, because its design system is so minimal.

Kadence adds a bit more CSS, and Kadence Blocks can add weight if you use lots of effects and animations. In real sites, the difference is small next to hosting, images and plugins.

Both appear on my fastest WordPress themes list.

Winner: GeneratePress, by a little.

Design Tools and Ease of Use

Kadence is more visual. You drag header elements into rows, pick from layout presets and style most things from the Customizer.

GeneratePress Premium is more structured: you enable modules, then build custom headers, post templates and archive loops as Block Elements using GenerateBlocks.

That approach is extremely flexible and produces clean markup, but it takes longer to learn. If you have never touched containers and grids, Kadence will feel easier.

Winner: Kadence for ease, GeneratePress for precise control.

Block Plugins (GenerateBlocks vs Kadence Blocks)

Kadence Blocks offers many ready-made blocks: tabs, accordions, testimonials, icon lists, forms, countdowns, galleries and more.

GenerateBlocks takes the opposite route with a handful of building blocks (container, grid, headline, button, image, query loop) that you combine into anything.

Kadence gets you there faster for common sections. GenerateBlocks keeps pages lighter and avoids block bloat.

Winner: Kadence Blocks for convenience, GenerateBlocks for lean builds.

Monetization and Hooks

For bloggers and affiliate sites, being able to insert opt-in forms, ads, or disclosures anywhere with display rules matters a lot.

GeneratePress Elements does this exceptionally well and is one reason the theme is so popular with niche site builders. Kadence Pro’s Hooked Elements does the same job and works well too.

I explain the idea in Best WordPress themes for bloggers. An author box is a good first Element to build; here is how to add an author box in GeneratePress.

Winner: Tie, with a slight nod to GeneratePress for maturity.

Support and Stability

GeneratePress is known for careful, conservative updates and a support forum where answers often include ready-to-paste CSS.

Kadence support is good, and the product moves faster with more frequent new features. Kadence is now part of Liquid Web’s StellarWP group, which has changed bundles and pricing more than once.

Winner: GeneratePress.

Pricing

ScenarioGeneratePressKadence
1 site, theme features only$59/yr$99/yr (Essentials) or free
5 to 20 sites$59/yr$99/yr (Essentials covers multiple sites; check current limits)
Theme plus Pro Block plugin$149/yr (GeneratePress One)$99/yr (Essentials includes Blocks Pro)
Theme plus security, backups and membershipsNot offered$299/yr (Kadence Pro)

If you only need the theme, GeneratePress is cheaper. If you want a Pro Blocks plugin too, Kadence Essentials is better value.

Kadence Pro only makes sense if you will use its extra tools, such as Kadence Security Pro. I break down every plan in Kadence pricing.

Winner: Depends on what you buy.

Example: The Same Header in Both Themes

Kadence: Customize > Header. Drag the logo to the left of the main row, the menu to the right, and a search icon next to it. Switch to the mobile tab and arrange a separate mobile header. Done in about five minutes, no code.

GeneratePress (Premium): Customize > Layout > Header to set the basic layout and add the navigation search. For anything custom, create a Block Element of type “Site Header” and build it with GenerateBlocks containers. About ten minutes the first time, with pixel-level control.

Important note: Both themes let you switch later without losing your posts. What you lose is the header, footer and layout settings, plus any pages built heavily with GenerateBlocks or Kadence Blocks, which need to be redone. Pick the one whose workflow you enjoy, because that is what you will live with.

Who Should Pick Which?

  • Affiliate or niche site builder with many sites: GeneratePress.
  • Business site needing lots of ready sections: Kadence.
  • Performance-obsessed developer: GeneratePress with GenerateBlocks.
  • Still undecided? Read how each compares with Astra in GeneratePress vs Astra and Kadence vs Astra, or with Blocksy in Blocksy vs Kadence.

Is Kadence faster than GeneratePress?

Not by default. GeneratePress is usually a little lighter. Both are fast enough that hosting and plugins matter more.

Is Kadence free?

Yes. The Kadence theme and Kadence Blocks have generous free versions. Paid bundles start at $99 a year.

Can I use Kadence Blocks with GeneratePress?

Yes. Many people do. It works well, though mixing ecosystems means two sets of styles to keep consistent.

Which is better for SEO?

Neither theme gives you a ranking advantage. Both output clean, fast HTML. Use a good SEO plugin and the steps in my WordPress SEO guide.

Which is better for WooCommerce?

Kadence, especially with Kadence Pro’s Shop Kit. GeneratePress handles stores well but with fewer store-specific design options.

Conclusion

For most people starting out, Kadence is the better theme because its free version does so much.

For serious bloggers and anyone running several sites, GeneratePress Premium is the better long-term investment: lean, stable and absurdly cheap per site.

You cannot go badly wrong with either, which is exactly why this question keeps coming up.
